Welcome to the Gateway for Education for
Sustainable Development brought to you by the
Council for Environmental Education. The
Council for Environmental Education (CEE)
provides a national focus in England for those
committed to education for sustainable
development. CEE works in partnership,
bringing people together to address issues of
common interest. Providing information is a
major focus of our work - through this website
and a range of newsletters and publications.
www.unesco.org/education/esd
UNESCO issued a declaration on the
responsibilities of the present generation
towards future generations on 12 November
1997. It covers: protection of the
environment; biodiversity and cultural
diversity; freedom of political, economic and
social choices; peace; development and
education - a new form of human rights
declaration. The transdiciplinary project
"Educating for a Sustainable Future" was
launched in 1994 as the principal mechanism
within UNESCO to follow-up the recommendations
concerning education made by the major UN
conferences of the 1990s and the conventions
on biological diversity, climate change and
desertification, and intended to mobilize,
integrate and innovate within the Organization
across sectoral lines. ESD's objective is the
promotion of values and ethics through
education at different levels in order to make
an impact on people's lifestyles.
www.worldwildlife.org/windows/material.html
One of the cornerstones of Windows on the Wild
is its collection of materials designed to
help educators teach about biodiversity and
the many ways it affects our lives. WOW
materials range from colorful posters of
wildlife to ecoregional maps to biodiversity
videos to in-depth curriculum guides. The
majority of WOW materials target middle school
students and educators. However, some
materials are appropriate for elementary and
secondary school educators, university
students, parents, and the general public.
Foundation for our Future - the
Sustainable Development Library
The library contains approximately 4,500
items. It specializes in American and
international publications about sustainable
development and education.
www.esdtoolkit.org
The Education for Sustainable Development
Toolkit is an easy-to-use manual for
individuals and organizations from both the
education and community sectors. This resource
addresses the potentially powerful alliance of
school systems and communities working
together to reach local sustainability goals.
Together they can reorient existing
curriculums to create locally relevant and
culturally appropriate education. The ESD
Toolkit will be helpful as ministries of
education, non-profit organizations, school
system, communities, and other organizations
prepare for United Nations Decade of Education
for Sustainable Development 2005 - 2015.

The North American Association for
Environmental Education (NAAEE) is a network
of professionals, students, and volunteers
working in the field of environmental
education throughout North America and in over
55 countries around the world. There are many
environmental interest groups, and many
organizations dedicated to improving
education. NAAEE uniquely combines and
integrates both of these perspectives, and
takes a cooperative, nonconfrontational,
scientifically-balanced approach to promoting
education about environmental issues.

to help educators find curricula, multimedia
resources, and other educational materials
that can enhance teaching environmental
education in a variety of settings. It is
hoped that this resource guide will assist
educators as they plan, develop, and implement
creative and effective environmental education
programs.
