A pioneer of social research in India and an eminent mass communication expert with 40 years of distinguished background, Dr. N. Bhaskara Rao is founder Chairman of well known and prestigious independent Centre for Media Studies (CMS). He is also founder chairman of prestigious market research and forecasting outfit, Marketing & Development Research Associates (MDRA) and BREAD. Earlier, he had built up ORG as its CEO. Dr.Rao is the author and proponent of Social Audit concept/approach to appraise public utilities/services along with two former chief justices of India. Dr. Rao pioneered Role Model Awards at National level. He pioneered psephology based election studies in India, 30 years ago. Dr. Rao could easily be credited for giving birth to Applied Social Science Research in India with his innumerable research studies of significance on a variety of subjects. He is credited for large-scale sample surveys in India. Dr. Rao had high academic achievements having three masters degrees and a Ph.D from two Indian and two US Universities. Dr Bhaskara Rao is an acknowledged expert in public opinion, feedback and market research methodologies. Dr. Rao made a mark on futures studies in India starting in 1975 with "India 2001", India 2020 in 1986 and he was the Coordinator of Vision 2020 Andhra Pradesh. His books/monographs/writings over three decades had profound impact on policies, programmes and perspectives of more than a couple of sectors. Dr.Rao has done extensive research in India on television effects, including on children and was responsible for benchmark studies on media and television policies. Dr. Rao held senior advisory positions with the Government and international agencies. He is founder-Director of more than a couple of research agencies. nbraocms@cmsindia.org Alka Tomar, ENVIS CO-ordinator Ms. Alka Tomar is post-graduate in Environmental Science and her area of specialization includes environmental education, natural resource and solid waste management. She also participated in eight months of international training programme on environmental education. Ms. Tomar has been working as deputy director, CMS Environment, New Delhi. With nine years of experience in project planning and management, she has conducted research to formulate locale specific conservation education, communication and social mobilization strategies. She has been undertaking outreach programmes for sensitizing students, teachers, policy planners and practitioners on variety of issues such as uranium mining in Jaduguda, rain water harvesting, climate change, ozone depletion, municipal waste. She has conducted research and analysis on pertinent issues like nitrate pollution in ground water, occupational health hazards in industrial areas, effluent treatment facilities, vehicular pollution, bio-medical waste management, alternative fuels for vehicles. She has also a number of research papers, chapters published to her credit in journals and books. She had been active in development sector for over a period of three years now through her association with several voluntary and civil society organizations. At present she plays an active role at CMS ENVIS team as the Information Officer and helps in procuring information from various relevant sources, analyzing it and using it for the updating of website. She is also actively engaged with various publications of the centre.
